Flickering lights, a circuit that keeps tripping, a power point that's suddenly dead. Intermittent electrical faults are frustrating precisely because they're hard to pin down. In the older homes I work in across Adelaide's North East, faults like these are common, and tracking them down properly is what stops them coming back.

Guessing is the expensive way

The temptation with an electrical fault is to just replace the part that seems to be the problem and hope it's fixed. Sometimes that works, often it doesn't, because the visible symptom isn't always the actual cause. Systematic fault finding, testing and narrowing down where the problem really sits, is what solves it properly the first time rather than throwing parts at it.

Common faults in established homes

The kinds of issues I'm regularly called out to diagnose:

  • Circuits that trip randomly with no obvious trigger
  • Lights that flicker or dim on their own
  • Power points or sections of the home that stop working
  • A faint burning smell near a switch, outlet, or the board
  • Buzzing sounds from switches or fittings

A safety warning worth taking seriously

Some of these are more than an annoyance. A burning smell, buzzing, warm switches or outlets, or scorch marks are signs of a potentially dangerous fault, often a loose or failing connection that can lead to a fire. If you notice any of these, it's worth getting it looked at sooner rather than later.

How I approach it

Fault finding is methodical. I work through the system logically, using proper testing to isolate exactly where the fault is, rather than guessing. Older wiring, past DIY work, and connections that have degraded over time are common culprits. Once I've found the real cause, I can explain what's going on in plain terms and give you a fixed price to put it right.

Something not working right?

If you've got an electrical fault that keeps coming back, or anything that seems unsafe, get in touch. I'll track down the actual cause properly, explain it clearly, and give you fixed pricing before any work begins. No guesswork, no repeat visits for the same problem.
