Switchboards & Electrical Safety in Adelaide's North East
The switchboard is where every circuit in your home begins, and in older properties it's often the first thing holding your safety back. Plenty of homes across Adelaide's North East still run the board they were built with, sometimes ceramic rewireable fuses that predate modern safety switches.
Upgrading your switchboard gives your home the safety, capacity and protection it needs for the way you live today, whether that's installing an EV charger, running multiple air conditioners or simply keeping your family safer.

Ceramic fuses, old circuit breakers, limited or no safety switch protection, overcrowding or a board that no longer has room for additional circuits are all reasons it may be worth upgrading. If you're unsure, a clear photo of the switchboard is often enough for me to get a pretty good idea of what you've got.
For new residential installations, all final subcircuits require 30mA RCD protection. Existing homes can be different, but when a switchboard is replaced, the Wiring Rules require additional RCD protection to be provided to the final subcircuits supplied from that switchboard.
Since 1 May 2023, Type AC RCDs can no longer be installed in new electrical installations, new final subcircuits, or alterations where RCD protection is required. Type A is now the typical replacement and is better suited to modern electrical equipment with electronic components. Existing compliant Type AC RCDs don't automatically have to be replaced just because they're Type AC.
Sometimes, yes. It depends on the condition of the existing board, available space and whether the existing protection is suitable. New circuits need to meet the current Wiring Rules, including the applicable RCD protection, so an older board can sometimes need work before another circuit can be added.
