Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading
Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or a board that trips for no reason. Here are the signs your switchboard is due for an upgrade, and why it matters in an older Adelaide home.

The switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system, but it's also the part most people never think about until something goes wrong. In a lot of the established homes I work in across Adelaide's North East, the board hasn't been touched since the house was built. That's usually where the problems start.
Your board still has ceramic fuses
If you open your switchboard and see old ceramic fuses with rewireable fuse wire, that's a clear sign it's dated. These boards have no safety switch protection, which means there's nothing there to protect you from an electric shock. Modern boards use circuit breakers and RCDs that trip in a fraction of a second when something goes wrong.
There are no safety switches
Safety switches, or RCDs, are the single most important safety feature in a modern switchboard. They monitor the flow of electricity and cut the power the instant they detect a fault, like current leaking to earth through a person. Many older homes have none at all, or only one covering part of the house. Every home should have safety switch protection across all circuits.
The board trips for no clear reason
Nuisance tripping is one of the most common reasons people call me out. If your board keeps tripping and you can't work out why, it's usually pointing to one of a few things:
- An overloaded circuit trying to run more than it was designed for
- Ageing wiring that's starting to break down
- A faulty appliance leaking current
- Moisture getting into an outdoor circuit or fitting
It's overcrowded or has been added to over the years
As homes get renovated, extended, and filled with more appliances, the electrical load grows. If your board has been added to piecemeal over the decades, it can end up overcrowded, poorly labelled, and running more than it was ever meant to. Upgrading gives you a clean, correctly sized board with room for future work like an EV charger or air conditioning.
Not sure what you're looking at?
If you've opened your switchboard and something on this list sounds familiar, it's worth getting it checked properly. I can assess your board, explain what's going on in plain terms, and give you a fixed price upfront before any work begins. No pressure, no surprises.
