Smoke alarms are one of those things that are easy to ignore until they matter most. Requirements have changed over the years, and a lot of the established homes I work in across Adelaide's North East no longer meet the current standard. It's worth understanding where you stand, because this is genuinely about your family's safety.

Old alarms don't last forever

Smoke alarms have a working life of around ten years, after which the sensor degrades and they become unreliable. If you can't remember the last time yours were replaced, or you're relying on old battery only units, there's a good chance they're past their best or missing entirely in parts of the home.

What a compliant setup looks like

Current requirements for homes have moved toward better protection. In general, that means:

  • Photoelectric smoke alarms, which respond well to smouldering fires
  • Alarms placed in the right locations throughout the home
  • Hardwired alarms with battery backup in many cases
  • Interconnected alarms, so when one sounds, they all do

Interconnection makes a real difference

One of the most important improvements is interconnection. When alarms are linked, a fire detected at one end of the house sets off every alarm at once, giving everyone the earliest possible warning. In a home where bedrooms are far from living areas, this can be the difference that matters most at night.

Placement matters

Where alarms are located is just as important as having them. They need to be positioned to detect smoke early as it travels through the home, particularly around sleeping areas and between levels. Getting the placement right is part of making sure the system actually does its job when it counts.

When did you last check yours?

If you're not sure whether your smoke alarms are compliant, or you know they're overdue, I can assess your home, explain what's needed, and install a properly interconnected setup. It's one of the most important upgrades you can make, and I'll give you fixed pricing before we start.
