Pergola Electrical Installation – Tea Tree Gully

This was definitely one of the most challenging installations I've done!

‍

The customer wanted two LED batten lights, a floodlight and four new power points installed throughout their new pergola.

‍

Being a two-storey home with no access to the downstairs ceiling space, I had to use existing downlight cutouts to snake cables through the ceiling and tongue up an internal wall to run two new switch wires.

‍

Getting power out to the pergola was another challenge. Rather than running an unsightly overhead catenary cable, we lifted the existing pavers and trenched 600mm deep, including underneath the concrete footpath. This meant we could get the cables where they needed to go without cutting up the concrete and leaving the homeowner with an expensive repair.

‍

I had my good mate Patty come out and give me a hand with the trenching and some of the work that really needed two people.

‍

As the pergola was already assembled, there wasn't a continuous internal cable route through the beams. I kept surface conduit to a minimum rather than having corrugated conduit jumping in and out of the structure. The exposed conduit will also be painted to match the Colorbond.

‍

Every cable penetration was mechanically protected using grommets or conduit, and the pergola frame was earthed with lugged connections at each power point location.

‍

A fair bit of work went into this one, but I'm really happy with how it turned out!
