Great lighting starts with good planning.

Downlights have become one of the most popular lighting choices for modern homes, but getting the layout right is just as important as choosing the fittings themselves.

It's not about more lights. It's about better light.

The best downlight installations don't draw attention to the fittings.

They simply make the room feel brighter, more open and more inviting.

I'll help position each light to reduce shadows, avoid dark corners and create even lighting that works for everyday living, whether it's your kitchen, living room, hallway or bedroom.

Downlights are a great choice if...

  • You're renovating your home.
  • Your existing lighting feels dark or uneven.
  • You're replacing bulky light fittings.
  • You want a cleaner, more modern ceiling.
  • You're building a new kitchen or living area.
  • You'd like brighter, more even lighting throughout your home.

What to expect

Every installation starts with the layout.

I'll help determine the right number of downlights, their spacing and the best colour temperature for each room before any holes are cut.

In established homes, I'll also work out the neatest cable route to minimise disruption and keep the finished installation looking clean and professional.

Once installed, every light is tested to make sure it's working exactly as it should.

Downlights in established homes

Installing downlights in an older home often takes a bit more planning.

Limited roof access, insulation, timber framing and previous renovations can all influence the final layout.

I specialise in established homes and take the time to achieve a result that looks natural, rather than simply fitting lights wherever it's easiest.

Why choose Lucid Electrical?

Good lighting isn't measured by how many downlights you install.

It's measured by how the room feels when you turn them on.

I'll help you choose a layout that complements your home, avoid common mistakes like overcrowding the ceiling and complete the installation with the neat workmanship Lucid Electrical is known for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many downlights do I need?

There's no magic number. It depends on the size of the room, ceiling height, wall colours and how you use the space. A kitchen usually needs more light than a bedroom, and I'd rather recommend the right layout than simply squeeze in as many lights as possible.

What colour temperature should I choose?

Warm white (3000K) is the most popular choice for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways because it creates a comfortable, relaxed feel. Cool white (4000K) is often preferred in kitchens, laundries and work areas where you want a cleaner, brighter light. If you're unsure, I'll help you choose a colour that suits your home and looks consistent throughout.

Can downlights be installed in older homes?

Yes. I regularly install downlights in established homes throughout Adelaide's North East. Older homes can present challenges like limited roof access, timber framing or packed roof spaces, but with careful planning it's usually possible to achieve a neat result without unnecessary damage.

Will LED downlights save money on my power bill?

In most homes, yes. Modern LED downlights use a fraction of the electricity that older halogen downlights used while producing the same or better light. They also last much longer, which means fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs over time.

Can you replace my existing halogen downlights with LED downlights?

Absolutely. Replacing older halogen fittings with modern LED downlights is one of the most common lighting upgrades I carry out. Along with reducing power consumption, it can improve light quality and reduce the amount of heat generated in your ceiling.

Can downlights be installed with dimmers?

Absolutely. Many LED downlights can be paired with compatible dimmers to give you greater control over the lighting in your home.
