In my experience, most original switchboards I inspect in established homes throughout Adelaide's North East are mounted on asbestos backing panels. Common names you'll often see include Zelemite, Lebah, Miscolite and Ausbestos. If your home was built between the 1950s and 1980s and still has its original switchboard or meter panel, it's worth assuming asbestos may be present until it's properly assessed. Any suspected asbestos materials are managed safely before work begins.

Does an asbestos switchboard need to be replaced?

Yes. If your switchboard is mounted on an asbestos backing panel, I recommend replacing it rather than leaving it in service. As part of the upgrade, I'll remove and dispose of the asbestos panel in accordance with South Australian asbestos regulations and install a modern insulated switchboard. SA Power Networks also requires asbestos meter panels to be replaced with modern insulated panels in many upgrade situations.

Will SA Power Networks need to be involved?

Yes. Most switchboard upgrades require SA Power Networks to disconnect and reconnect the power while the work is carried out. I organise the paperwork, book the outage and coordinate the whole process, so you don't have to deal with multiple companies or chase anyone up.

What replaces the old asbestos panel?

The asbestos backing panel is replaced with a modern insulated meter panel that complies with current SA Power Networks requirements. Do I need a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes. You're legally required to receive a Certificate of Compliance for prescribed electrical work. It's your proof that the installation has been tested, complies with the relevant regulations and is safe to energise. I issue one at the completion of every switchboard upgrade.
