Safety switches help protect people.

They constantly monitor the flow of electricity and disconnect the power almost instantly if they detect electricity flowing somewhere it shouldn't. While nothing can eliminate every electrical risk, a safety switch provides one of the most important layers of protection in your home.

Any new safety switches I install use modern Type A protection, which is required for new RCD installations under the current Australian requirements. Existing compliant Type AC safety switches don't have to be replaced simply because they're older, but any new installation uses the current standard.

What's involved in installing safety switches?

I'll inspect your existing switchboard to see what protection is already in place and whether additional safety switches can be installed into the existing board or whether a switchboard upgrade makes more sense.

Once installed, every safety switch is tested, each circuit is clearly labelled and the installation is checked thoroughly before the power is restored.

Once the job's completed, you'll receive a Certificate of Compliance.

How do I know if my home has safety switches?

Not every home does. Open your switchboard and look for a device with a "Test" or "T" button. If you're still unsure, send me a photo and I'll let you know what protection you have.

What's the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker protects your wiring. A safety switch helps protect people by disconnecting the power if it detects an electrical fault.

What's the difference between Type AC and Type A safety switches?

Type A safety switches are required for new installations, new circuits and alterations where RCD protection is required. Unlike old Type AC safety switches, Type A can detect both AC and pulsating DC fault currents produced by many modern electronic appliances.

Can safety switches be added without replacing my switchboard?

Sometimes. It depends on the condition and available space in your existing switchboard. I'll inspect it first and recommend the best option.

Should I test my safety switches?

Yes. Every safety switch has a Test button and should be tested periodically to confirm it's operating correctly.

Will I receive a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes. Every safety switch installation or upgrade is tested before the power is restored, and you'll receive a Certificate of Compliance once the job is complete.
