Switchboard Upgrades in Adelaide's North East

Your switchboard might be 30 or 40 years old and never have given you any trouble. But then again, cars once came without seatbelts. Just because something has worked for decades doesn't necessarily mean it meets today's safety standards.

As our homes have changed, so have our electrical systems. EV chargers, solar, induction cooktops and modern appliances all place greater demands on your switchboard than homes were originally designed for. I'll inspect your existing installation, explain what's worth upgrading and what isn't, then recommend the safest solution for your home.

Why upgrade your switchboard?

A modern switchboard does more than keep the lights on.

It's designed to better protect your home and your family by detecting electrical faults faster and disconnecting power when something isn't right. It also gives you the capacity to safely add new electrical circuits as your home changes over time.

Many established homes were built long before today's electrical demands. Air conditioners, induction cooktops, EV chargers and home batteries all place extra demand on your electrical system. Upgrading your switchboard helps ensure your home is safer today and ready for whatever comes next.

Signs it might be time for a switchboard upgrade

  • Your home still has ceramic rewireable fuses
  • Your switchboard doesn't have modern safety switches
  • There's no room left for additional circuits
  • Circuit breakers trip regularly
  • You're installing an EV charger, induction cooktop or other high powered appliance
  • Your switchboard is mounted on an older asbestos meter panel or has been identified as outdated or unsafe

What's involved in a switchboard upgrade?

Every upgrade starts with checking your existing switchboard, meter panel and incoming supply to make sure the new installation is suitable for your home.

The old equipment is removed and replaced with modern circuit protection, each circuit is clearly labelled and the entire installation is thoroughly tested before the power is restored.

Some upgrades also require metering alterations or supply isolation through SA Power Networks. If that's needed, I'll organise the process and keep you informed every step of the way.

Once the job's completed, you'll receive a Certificate of Compliance.

Switchboard upgrades for established homes

Most of the homes I work in weren't built with today's electrical demands in mind.

It's common to find ceramic fuses, limited space for new circuits or switchboards that have been added to over several decades. Every home is a little different, so I take the time to understand what's already there before recommending the most practical solution.

If your existing switchboard is still suitable, I'll tell you. If it's time for an upgrade, I'll explain exactly why, without overcomplicating it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

If your home still has ceramic fuses, doesn't have safety switches or you're planning to install new high powered appliances, it's worth having your switchboard checked. A few photos is often enough for me to give you some initial advice.

Can I add an EV charger without upgrading my switchboard?

Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. It depends on the capacity and condition of your existing installation. I'll assess everything first and recommend the safest option.

Will my power be turned off?

Yes. The power will need to be isolated while the switchboard is upgraded and tested. I'll let you know beforehand how long the interruption is likely to be.

Do all switchboard upgrades include safety switches?

Yes. Modern switchboard upgrades include the appropriate safety protection required under current Australian Standards.

Will SA Power Networks need to be involved?

Some switchboard upgrades require SA Power Networks to disconnect or reconnect the supply, or complete metering alterations. If that's required, I'll organise the process and keep you updated throughout the job.

Will I receive a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes. Once the job's completed, you'll receive a Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work.
